Carnatic music, the traditional classical music of South India is performed cross-legged, seated on the floor. The main artist is seated in the centre, with the percussionists on both sides. Dr. Subramaniam often performs duets with his son Ambi Subramaniam, and they are accompanied by two, three or four South Indian percussionists (mridangamghatam, khanjiramoorsing). A typical concert is of one and a half to two hours in duration and has a short interval between the first and second half.

Much of Carnatic music is improvised, and depends on the creativity and technical prowess of the performer. Dr. Subramaniam’s concerts normally contain a combination of the following compositional forms: varnamkriti and ragam-tanam-pallavi.
